Dr. Jack C. McCarty, Jr. - 2024

Dr. Jack C. McCarty, Jr., (Bachelor of Science in Agronomy 1968, Master of Science in Agronomy 1971, and Ph.D. in Agronomy 1974) is a sixth generation Mississippian who has dedicated his career to advancing cotton research. Growing up on a family farm in Clarke County, he developed a passion for agriculture, which led to his studies at MSU.

Since 1976, McCarty has served as a research agronomist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service, plays a pivotal role in cotton breeding advancements. His contributions include the development of cotton germplasm with enhanced pest resistance, innovations in plant mapping technology, and the identification of genetic markers for improved breeding. As a member of the USDA team responsible for growing the world's first field of Bt cotton, he helped achieve a breakthrough in pest-resistant cotton production, a milestone that made a lasting impact on the industry.

A prolific researcher, McCarty has authored over 220 peer-reviewed publications and received numerous accolades. His commitment to mentorship is equally important, supporting over 50 graduate students and young international scientists.

McCarty is a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the Air National Guard and continues to give back through an endowed scholarship fund supporting agronomy students. He resides in Starkville.
